Our Guest Speaker Peter Shawn Taylor – “The Play is Under Review:
A unified theory of sport and history in honour of Canada150”
Peter last spoke to the Club on the 200th anniversary of birth of Sir John A. MacDonald. We are honoured to have him back to share his thoughts on another important milestone in the history of Canada, our 150th.
Always entertaining and controversial, Peter will argue that, just as the trend of more frequent use of slow motion instant replays in search of greater precision is destroying the overall enjoyment of professional sports, so too is our growing obsession with intense scrutiny of individual historical events and characters is destroying Canadian history, a history that should rightly be appreciated as tolerant, enlightened and worthy of much celebration.
Peter Shawn Taylor is editor-at-large with Maclean's as well as columnist for the Waterloo Region Record. Following a Master's degree in economics from the University of Alberta in 1989, Peter served as senior analyst for the Alberta Liberal caucus in the early 1990's under leader Laurence Decore. Since then, he has worked extensively in journalism, writing for numerous publications, including National Post, The Globe and Mail, Winnipeg Free Press, Montreal Gazette, Reader's Digest, Saturday Night and The Walrus; as well as writing policy papers for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and Frontier Centre for Public Policy. Peter lives in Waterloo.
